Smooth Moves mit Spine
DIGITAL PRODUCTION 04:2022 is out in print. It includes my story on Spine Pro (in German) and how to use it with the Unreal Engine. Spine Pro is an incredibly advanced and intuitive 2D animation tool, with an emphasis on game animation loops. Its deformation toolset is second to none and its easy to use bone constraints allow for pretty sophisticated character rigs, including the popular 2.5D or fake 3D setups. In this article I explain the standout features and workflow with the provided Spine demo projects, plus I demonstrate how to create a character from scratch, starting with a painting in Rebelle 5, finishing the illustration in Affinity Designer, to then rig and animate it in Spine Pro, to finally set it up for a mixed 3D/2D scene in Unreal, including the respective Blueprints to control the animation behavior.
