Unreal – The Fifth Generation

 

DIGITAL PRODUCTION 03:2022 is out in print! My contribution (in German) is a 13 page report on the features and highlights of the new Unreal generation. UE-5 is a historical milestone and a breathtaking breakthrough on many levels such as dramatically improved real-time visuals with software GI and many important quality of life improvements for developers and artists. Lumen and Nanite are the big features that everyone is talking about, but there is a lot more under the hood. It was very exciting to test drive the new toolset and experiment with the new architecture that will turbocharge the next generation of AAA games, feature films and enterprise applications. It also includes a much tighter integration with the Quixel assets browser and the incredible Metahuman Creator, which I took out for a test run with a cinematic project. 

Included is my conversation (in English) with Aaron Sims, L.A. based UE-5 filmmaker and VFX Pro behind titles such as Sin City, The Mummy, Transformers and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, on game engine film-making and why this is an exciting time for Unreal users and realtime VFX artists.
